(41) tamar island

60 Great Short Walks Tasmania Australia - National Parks and World Heritage SitesTamar Island is just a few minutes drive down the West Tamar Highway (A7) from downtown Launcestor. Situated in the Tamar River, the 7-hectare island is the largest in a group of five small islands found in this section of the river. A boardwalk from the shore crosses two of these smaller islands to link to Tamar Island.

This is home to Tasmania’s only Wetland Interpretation Centre and the island walk is not only entertaining, it is also educational. On the island and the wetlands you pass over, you will see a wide variety of bird species including pelicans, swans, cormorants and many more. As well, you will encounter lizards, and frogs along with insects such as dragonflies. Many other insects can also be seen depending on the season.

The 2km (one way) island walk takes approximately 1.5-hours return. The boardwalk to the island is graded Level 1 and suited to wheelchairs, prams and strollers. The walk on the island itself is graded Level 2 and has a natural surface and is generally not considered suitable for wheelchairs.

Sun protection and clothes suited to weather are recommended.

NO pets, bicycles, roller blades or skateboards are permitted on the boardwalk or island track.

Note. Because Tamar Island is located in the tidal reaches of the river, children should be supervised at all times.

Facilities:
Toilets are located close to the car park off the West Tamar Highway. There are toilets and a picnic area with free gas BBQ’s on the island.

Vehicle Access:
The Wetlands Centre is an approximate 10-minute drive from Launceston city centre and is located between the suburbs of Legana and Riverside.
